Leica 8x56 Geovid R Binocular/Rangefinder (Yards) is a compact apparatus that incorporates multiple functions. An inclinometer complements its range-finding, which makes it functional also while uphill or downhill use!
The Leica 8x56 Geovid R Binocular incorporates the function of a rangefinder and provides a magnification of 8x. It combines large 56 mm objective lenses with a ballistics calculator integrated with it for accurate range-finding. There are an inbuilt inclinometer and a computer that work with the infrared rangefinder for accurate shot positioning while moving up or down an inclination. This EHR ballistic function provides the horizontal equivalent of a slope in a 10 to 550-meter range.
Our Take on Leica 8x56 Geovid R Binocular/Rangefinder:
The laser range finder in the Leica 8x56 Geovid R Binocular/Rangefinder measures range in yards and has a simple design with a one-button function. It works fine for a range of 10 to 1200 yards. The measuring accuracy is +/- 1 yard and +/- 2 yards for 400 meters and 800 meters, respectively. For measurement with stationary objects, there is a spot mode in the device, while for moving or multiple subjects, one can use the scan mode. The infrared laser beam used is in the FDA Class-1 eye-safe range. There is an in-view 4-digit LED display that avoids interruption in viewing the subject. Without the feature, the user would have to take their eyes off the object to observe the range. The display also adjusts automatically to the surrounding brightness level.
At 1000 yards, the Leica 8x56 Geovid R Binocular/Rangefinder provides a field of view of 357 ft. and it has an apparent viewing angle of 54 degrees. The lenses have an HDC anti-reflection coating that cuts off any reflection and improves the light input, providing high-contrast images. A +/- 4 diopter correction is also available for the user to have an accurate view. The unit has a large focus wheel at the center and is mountable on a tripod with an optional adaptor. With the high exit pupil value of 7 mm, anyone can use it extensively in low-light conditions. Thus it renders an exceptional experience even while using it at sunset or sunrise times. The prisms are compact and located on the roof.
The chassis construction of the Leica 8x56 Geovid R Binocular/Rangefinder is made of a durable and lightweight aluminum alloy, making it easy to use and handle. Nitrogen is filled in the tubes to provide a fog-proof experience. Also, proper sealing makes it a waterproof apparatus that works fine even when 5 meters (16.5 ft.) underwater. The device is suitable to use even in extreme weather conditions. Furthermore, it has a well-protective rubber-armored body with a slip-resistant finish for a firm grip. The configuration is of cross-bridge type, and there are twist-up eye-cups to use the unit with or without eyewear. The eye-cups have click-stops at two different positions. The binoculars function on a single CR2 battery which works fine for 2000 measurements at an ambient temperature of 68 degree F (20 degree C). The whole thing weighs 38.8 oz. including the battery.
