Ready to purchase a new dishwasher for your home, but wondering what size is right for your household? As you research the top dishwasher brands and models, use our dishwasher buying guide to help you determine the dishwasher capacity that will best fit your family and lifestyle.
Before knowing the dishwasher dimensions and capacity you’ll need, here are a few questions you should ask:
How much space is available in your kitchen?
How many times per week do you plan to wash dishes?
How many people live in your home?
Do you wish to wash pots and pans, or oddly shaped dishes, with your dishwasher?
With your answers to these questions in mind, you’ll be able to select the proper dishwasher dimensions using our guide.
Striking the right balance between dishwasher size and capacity is important when buying a new dishwasher. The three general sizes of dishwashers are compact, standard and tall tub. When choosing a dishwasher size, it’s essential to first determine how much kitchen space you have to work with, as this will help decide the right dishwasher dimensions for your home.
Also, consider the actual dishwasher capacity of each dishwasher size available. Capacity, which is measured by how many place settings (i.e., dinner plate, cup, spoon, etc.) can fit in a single load, varies between the different sizes of dishwashers. Review the three main sizes and capacities below to get a better idea of your options:
If you don’t have a lot of space or have a smaller family, a compact dishwasher may be more fitting, at 18” wide. Holding up to eight place settings, compact dishwashers are great for a couple or someone who lives alone. Keep in mind that if you cook often, you’ll likely have to run the dishwasher more frequently due to the smaller size.
Most dishwashers are standard “built-in” models, featuring the well-known two-rack design. At approximately 24 to 30” wide, 25” deep and 34” tall, standard dishwashers are better suited for families of four or more as they can hold up to 12 standard place settings. This capacity allows you to do less loads of dishes each week because of its larger size.
For those with larger families or oversized dishes and cookware, you may want to look at a tall tub dishwasher. Holding up to 14 place settings, this model has the additional dishwashing space with similar external dimensions as a standard dishwasher. The tall tub dishwasher is perfect for your oddly shaped dishes such as serving platters or large skillets. It’s ideal for the entertainer!
Other factors that will affect a dishwasher’s capacity are its stacking and racking features. Standard dishwashers traditionally have two racks, but newer models are beginning to feature a third-rack option, offering the flexibility to wash many more dishes or smaller items. Look for this feature if you want to maximize the space available in your dishwasher without buying a larger size.
Additionally, consider other features such as flexible or removable tines, shelves, racks to accommodate tall glasses or stemware, and convertible racks for multiple uses – all of which will give you more flexibility with your dishwasher capacity.
