Laundry & Kitchen Appliance Trends

new kitchen appliance trends

Planning to replace or buy new appliances for your home this year? You might be surprised by some of the new innovations available in kitchen and laundry appliances. hhgregg’s Daryl Massy, the Divisional Merchandise Manager of Appliances, discusses some of the most exciting appliance trends on the market.

What are the biggest trends in kitchen appliances this year?

There is a trend towards customers looking for alternatives to Stainless Steel and also interested in fingerprint-proof finishes in the kitchen. Finishes such as Black Stainless Steel and Slate have been developed to meet these needs and there is now a wide selection of these products.

As far as new product capabilities, flexible door configurations will continue to be a hot trend in refrigeration, including 4-door, 5-door, door-in-door, and even a compartment that can change from freezer to fridge.

For smaller kitchen appliances, a cold drink version of a single serve (K-cup) brewer will launch in 2016. Food preservation is a growth category along with healthy living appliances.

What about connected appliances?

Connected appliances will take a new step forward with a refrigerator that can serve as the ‘Hub’ of your home, have its own app, access the internet, display video, play music, order groceries, and much more. There will even be refrigerators that can dispense hot water and brew you a K-cup of coffee.

Connected appliances add convenience. They can allow you to pre-heat your oven before you get home, order groceries right from your fridge, monitor your washer or dryer cycle, and more.

What about laundry appliances?

New laundry appliances will feature the option of black stainless for the first time in 2016. New in 2016 will be larger capacity top and front load washers, a 2nd washer in the pedestal below your front load washer to handle smaller loads, the ability to add a forgotten sock to a front load cycle in-progress, and front controls on top load washers.

New products will make it easier for consumers to access their controls, spend less time doing laundry, and get better cleaning results.

Where do you see the future of appliances going?

The future is bright. Innovation is at an all-time high with no sign of slowing down. Appliances are getting more energy efficient, smarter, and easier to use.

Should consumers wait to jump on these new trends, or act now?

It can easily be forgotten how much consumers can save by using new energy efficient appliances in place of their older ones. It can pay off to not wait for a current appliance to break down. Updating appliances can also increase your home value and attractiveness to buyers when on the market.
