HP TouchPad’s webOS Offers Increased Flexibility

The HP TouchPad is already making waves. It’s the first electronic tablet to use Palm’s webOS.

Hewlett Packard is known for its touch screen technology from its TouchSmart All-in-One PCs, which remove the tower from the PC computer. HP puts the PC brains in the screen instead – and offers touch screen technology as well. But instead of being Windows-based like its TouchSmart cousins, the HP TouchPad will use Palm’s webOS, a mobile operating system that competes with the iPad.

webOS Functionailty

webOS is the same operating system that HP uses on its smartphones, and if you have a wireless plan for your TouchPad, you can receive calls or texts that come into your HP Pre. And simply touch your Pre to your TouchPad to sync your present activities. For example, if you’re reading a website on your Pre but want to transfer it to the larger screen on your TouchPad, simply touch the two devices together, and it’s like a Vulcan mind meld.

webOS also offers expanded multitasking capabilities. Now you can easily move back and forth between apps without losing your place. The TouchPad offers seamless access to your online email and social networking accounts. When you sign in to one of your accounts, the contact information of your family, friends and colleagues populates the tablet for easy reference. Now you will remember your Facebook friends’ birthdays without fail! Easily view your work and personal calendars side by side, and combine IMs and text messages into a single conversation.

Typing on the TouchPad is a snap. Whether you are conducting a search, beginning an email or just about anything, the tablet’s Just Type feature lets you start typing without launching an app. And notifications of calendar items, new texts or new emails notify without interrupting your frame of thought. They only take up part of your screen and provide the first few lines of a message, so you can address pertinent matters and handle others later.

The TouchPad also delivers the entire web. It comes with support for the latest technologies including Adobe Flash Player and HTML5, and you will enjoy blazing fast speeds with its WiFi-enabled system.

HP TouchPad Specs

The tablet features a 9.7-inch XGA 1024 by 798 resolution display with 18-bit color, a 1.2-gigahertz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel webcam for live video calling. It also comes with stereo speakers and Beats Audio™ technology, a micro USB connector for charging the device and a 3.5mm stereo jack for a headset, headphones or microphone. It’s only half an inch thick and weighs 1.6 pounds.

The TouchPad will be available in July at hhgregg in both 16-gigabyte and 32-gigabyte models. Optional accessories for the HP TouchPad include the HP Touchstone Charging Dock, the HP TouchPad Wireless Keyboard and the HP TouchPad Case.
